Chapter Four
“Hey, you’re back.” The scruffy guy behind the counter at Al’s Automotive greeted me as if we were long lost buddies. His pale gaze lingered a little longer than I enjoyed on my crotch. “Where’d you run off to yesterday?”
“It’s a long story.”
“Yeah, I saw the cop cars over there.” He stared past me at Scott and Troy. Scott was busy distracting Troy with his keys while the little boy giggled. “I see you have the whole family with you today.” He didn’t sound thrilled about it.
I didn’t bother to enlighten him as to the nature of my relationship with Scott. If he thought we were together that was awesome. It meant he’d be less likely to get all creepy with me again. “So is the car ready?” I nudged a little.
“Oh, yeah. Let’s see, is this your current phone number and address?”
I nodded. “Yep.”
“Cell?”
I squinted, unsure why he would need that. “I, uh, would rather not give that out.”
“I’m afraid the law requires that information sir.” He stared straight into my eyes assertively.
Frowning I shook my head. “I’m picking my car up. Why would you need that info now?”
“I don’t make the laws.” He spoke softly, but he leaned toward me in a semi-intimidating manner. Then his gaze fell on Scott who was approaching from behind and he straightened.
“Is there a problem?” Scott asked, putting Troy on the ground for a second.
“He’s saying it’s the law that I give them my cell number.” I looked at Scott, and his mouth tensed.
“That’s not true.”
The guy behind the counter brushed his stringy blond hair off his forehead. “I didn’t say law. I said we would prefer it for our records.”
Scrunching my face I argued. “No you said it was the law, dude.”
“I think you heard me wrong.”
Scott put his hand on my shoulder and the warmth of it calmed me. “Can I just please pay and get my car now?”
Desk guy wiped the sweat from his upper lip. The beads of moisture had made an appearance the minute Scott stood next to me. “That will be six hundred and twenty dollars.” I handed him my debit card and he swiped it while flicking his gaze at Scott nervously.
“Hey, James, would you mind taking Troy over to the door for a second?” Scott asked me quietly.
I stared at Troy who stood near his dad’s legs and then Troy held out his arms to me. I’d never had a kid not scream when I went to hold it so I froze. Troy flapped his arms and smiled sweetly so I picked him up and moved to the door. Troy held on tight to me, and his little chubby body in my arms made me feel oddly protective. He smelled like pretzels and grape juice, and he played with the collar of my T-shirt as we waited.
Scott leaned toward the guy behind the desk. I couldn’t hear what he said, but the kid looked like he was going to pass out. The clerk kept nodding his head and saying “Yes, sir.
